Obituary: Clinton Rex Hardy, Sr., PhD.

Dr. Clinton Rex Hardy Sr., 78 of Wilmington went to be with the Lord on January 13, 2013.
Rex was born in Goldsboro, North Carolina on January 7, 1935 to the late Alvis Rex Hardy and Mary McCandless Hardy. Rex was a member of Temple Baptist Church.
Rex grew up in the Wilmington area and attended New Hanover High School. Throughout his years in high school Rex excelled in football, baseball, and basketball. He was selected to the East- West All-Star game in basketball in 1954. Rex was also selected to play in the Junior College All- State team while attending Wilmington College.
From 1957-1959 Rex served in the U.S. Army. During most of this time he was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska.
Rex received a Bachelor’s degree in Education from Elon College in 1962. He attended The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he obtained a Master’s degree in Education in 1963. In 1975 Rex graduated from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro with his Doctorate in Education.
Rex worked as a teacher, coach, and administrator for thirty-five years in North Carolina public schools. He was instrumental in starting the Driver Education Program at John T. Hoggard, where he also served as a head coach in football, and assistant coach in basketball and baseball from 1967-1969. Rex also coached JV football at New Hanover High School and taught driver education from 1966-1967. Rex retired from education in 1996 after fourteen years as an Assistant Principal at D.C. Virgo.
Rex has published numerous articles in state and national journals in the area of physical education and athletics. He always had a love for physical education and athletics, and feels that one should play only for the love of the game.
Rex enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He had a great sense of humor. He loved to laugh and make others laugh with him. Rex was a kind and loving husband, brother, father, grandfather, and friend to many. He loved fishing and the outdoors and was an avid Tarheel fan. In the most recent years Rex especially loved the entertainment provided by his six grandchildren. He really enjoyed watching them grow and play.
Rex is survived by his wife Janice Jackson Hardy of fifty years, his daughter Amy Bradshaw, husband Mike and their two children, Madelyn 12 and Alex 10. His son Clint, wife Jamie and their four children Rex 11, Garrett 9, Ava 6, and Brooke 4. Twin sisters, Jane Croom and husband Don, and Jean Wells and husband Fred. Many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews. Rex will be greatly missed by many.
A visitation will be held at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel 4108 S. College Rd from 6-8pm on Wednesday January 16th. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday January 17th at Temple Baptist Church 1801 Market Street Wilmington N.C. A burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
